"The Adventures of Supergirl" is the first episode and premiere of the second season from the The CW television series Supergirl, which aired on October 10, 2016. It is the first new episode of Supergirl to air on the CW since moving from CBS, and the first to feature a prominent appearance by Superman, portrayed by Tyler Hoechlin.
Plot
Upon discovering the crashed pod, Kara and Hank find a male inside. At Hank's suggestion, they take the alien to a more secure location: the real headquarters of the DEO atop a skyscraper. While the unconscious pilot is examined, Kara returns to work, where Cat insists she decide what she really wants to do with her life. As she returns home for her date with James, Kara sees a report on the TV of the spacecraft Venture's engine exploding during its maiden flight. Kara rushes to save the craft, aided in her efforts by the arrival of her cousin Clark Kent, A.K.A. Superman. Successful, Kara brings Clark back to the DEO, where everyone except Hank is cordial. Alex learns that he and Superman have a troubled past involving Hank discovering kryptonite and keeping it at the DEO to use against rogue Kryptonians instead of destroying it. Kara and Clark decide to investigate the company who partially built the Venture, Luthor Corp, now under the management of Lena Luthor, sister to Lex Luthor, who assumed leadership following Lex's imprisonment. Lena wants to publicly rebrand Luthor Corp in order to atone for her brother's many crimes. As their investigation turns up no results, Kara starts to believe Lena is sincere.
At the DEO, Alex and Winn discover that someone sabotaged the Venture because Lena was supposed to be on the spacecraft. When Lena prepares to take off in a helicopter, a series of weapon drones arrive to kill her, but are thwarted by Supergirl and Superman. After saving Lena, Clark returns to the DEO, where Winn reveals the attacker to be a terrorist named John Corben. At Alex's suggestion, Hank has a talk with Superman to settle their differences, but Superman states that he cannot be involved with the DEO as long as the kryptonite in their possession can potentially be used against him or Kara. In the meantime, Kara gets a lecture from Cat at work about her decision. At the public rebranding ceremony of Luthor Corp as simply "L-Corp," Lena is about to give a speech when she comes under attack. Both Supergirl and Superman arrive and find the Luthor Corp building about to collapse. Working together, the cousins successfully save the structure while Alex catches up with Corben, who is posing as a police officer. He overpowers Alex and takes her hostage, revealing that Lex was the one who hired him to kill Lena, but Lena non-fatally shoots Corben, saving Alex.
In the aftermath, Clark shows Lena the Daily Planet headline of Corben's capture, and Lena thanks him for identifying her as Corben's shooter, believing it will reduce the risk of further attacks by Lex. Inspired by Clark and at Lena's suggestion, Kara finally tells Cat that she wants to be a reporter, a position Cat had predicted Kara would be ideal for when she was first hired. Cat gives Kara the job, and Kara and James agree that the two should remain friends. At the DEO, Hank makes Winn an official member of the organization, while Clark decides to stick around and help out Kara. At the secret headquarters of Project Cadmus, Corben is being experimented on by the organization's leader, who redubs him "Metallo."
Reception
This episode received excellent reviews.
Cliff Wheatley of IGN gave the episode a 8.7/10, stating "Any fears that Supergirl might suffer from the transition to The CW were immediately put to rest this week. The show's innate charm remains in full force. If anything, that charm has only increased now that Kara is finally joined by her cousin. Despite a few missteps in this episode (the poor handling of the Kara/James romance, the lack of focus on Mon-El), the new season is off to a very strong start."[1]
Caroline Siede of the AV Club gave the episode an A, citing the outing as the best way to kick off the second season.[2]
