The Alisher Navoi State Museum of Literature of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan is a unique and scientific-cultural, educational establishment which mainly focuses on collecting and researching the historical materials and objects which are related to the Uzbekistan’s history. The museum plays big role in cultural development of young generation in Uzbekistan and it keeps various documents, manuscripts from the Middle Ages.

History

“The Alisher Navoi State Museum of Literature” was first established as the exhibition for the 500 year’s anniversary of Ali-Shir Nava’i. On the base of this exhibition in 1947 the government opened the new “Literature museum”. From the year of 1958 the “Literature museum” was sent under the “Language and literature institute” of Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan. However, in 1967 on January the 18th the museum was set to be independent by the edict of Uzbek government and was given new 4 levels building in Tashkent city. The first director of the museum was H. Sulaymonov. In 1976 the museum again became part of the bigger institution called “Handwritings museum”. After some years in 1989 on September the 13th museum was independent for the second time by the Central committee of Uzbekistan and by the Department of Ministers of UzSSR.

Museum after the independence

After the independence of Republic Uzbekistan “The Alisher Navoi State Museum of Literature” was given its current name and there are more than 17000 thousand art works, portraits, rare archeological monuments, samples of national applied art. Museum is the member of ICOM organization which is the International Soviet of Museums. There are some departments at the museum which hold researches on the history of Uzbek literature. There is a fund of handwritings which is opened at the museum, and this fund is enlarged by unique handwritings of different times. There are more than 65000 documents which are kept in the fund, and those documents cover the archives of the writers of Uzbekistan from the 19th century. The museum holds the scientific literature activities. In addition to this, the museum has set the educational center “Talim” (Education) which is designed to implement the promotion of the rich literary heritage of the East. Nowadays, the director of the “The Alisher Navoi State Museum of Literature” is doctor of sciences Saidbek Khasananov. One academician, and three doctors of sciences, four candidates for the sciences and 50 employees are currently involved to work at the museum.
