The Inner Circle is a selective social networking dating app for young professionals who live in the same city operating on an invitation-only structure.[2][3] Its user interface is similar to that of Facebook.[4][5] The Inner Circle is owned by Circle Imperium B.V.,[6] with offices based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.[7]

History

The Inner Circle was founded in 2012 by David Vermeulen[8] and Michael Krayenhoff.[9] The website was originally launched in Amsterdam [7] and is also live in Barcelona, London, Milan, Paris, Stockholm[10] and Berlin.[11] The Inner Circle and Tinder changed the perception of online dating under young professionals in The Netherlands according to national newspaper de Volkskrant [4]

The Inner Circle aims to bring together like-minded singles in a trustworthy environment.[12] In August 2016 the website had 125.000 members[11][13] and had 130.000 applicants on the waiting list.[14] In February 2015, The Inner Circle was among the Netherlands' top-ten most visited dating websites.[15] The revenue model is a combination of subscriptions, events, and partnerships.[16] The Inner Circle has no outside funding and has been profitable from inception.[17]

Overview

The network/app operates in a similar way to many dating sites: there are "like" functions, photo browsing, profile building, and ways to interact and chat. The website also has features similar to Facebook. Users post plans to go out to bars and clubs; users traveling to London can ask for advice and meet-ups.[18] Members of The Inner Circle get to invite 5 friends each, who will be screened before approval.[19] Users can access the platform through a website, iOS app and Android app.[20]

The Inner Circle hosts offline events on a regular basis for users located in Amsterdam, London, Paris, Milan, Barcelona and Stockholm.[21][22][23]
