The Priory Institute, is part of the St Mary’s Dominican Priory in Tallaght,[1] Dublin 24, Ireland and provides, certificate, diploma, and degree programmes in Theology and Philosophy.While initially materials are distributed from Tallaght usually at an induction meeting, the courses are delivered by Distance Learning,[2] students can avail of local centres for assistance in Newry, Drogheda, Galway, Cork and Sligo.
Course Accreditation
In 2011 the Institute entered into partnership with The Institute of Technology, Tallaght (ITT). As a delegated authority of Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI), The Institute of Technology, Tallaght validate all the academic programmes at The Priory institute. QQI is a public body, which is accountable to the Irish government and the Oireachtas and is the national accreditation board for higher education qualifications in Ireland.The Institute's certificates, diplomas and degrees are aligned with the National Framework of Qualifications NFQ structure.
In addition the Accreditation Service for International Colleges,(ASIC), recognises The Priory Institute as a Premier Institution
The Institute also runs a number of certificate programmes, the modules of which are available to be taken as single subjects. Students may take these modules for academic ECTS Credits if they wish or choose to take them without academic credit. Other short courses are also run from the institute.
The Diploma and Bachelor of Theology programmes are entitled to tax relief under the Irish governments scheme.
Events
Graduation
The Institute's Graduation ceremony takes place in November, each year in St. Mary's Dominican Priory, with graduates, friends and family members in attendance, as well as staff members of the Institute and representatives from IT Tallaght.
2005 saw the first students graduate with the level 8 BA in Theology at this time the Institute was associated with the University of Wales.[3] The 2015 graduation ceremony took place at the Institute on 14th November with the awarding of 18 Degrees, 1 Diploma, and 1 Certificate.The 2016 Graduation is scheduled for 12th November.
Summer Schools and Lecture Series
The Priory Institute hosts an annual summer school. In 2016 it was on the subject of Communion, The Church's Self Understanding a series of 10 online lectures on the central teaching of Vatican II. In 2015 the summer school topic was Paul - The Radical Gospel. In 2014 the institute conducted three, two week Online Summer Schools in collaboration with Domuni.
In the Spring of 2016 The Priory Institute hosted the Jubilee Lecture Series of 10 lectures, to celebrate the 800 Jubilee of the Order of Preachers(Dominicans).
In Summer 2017 in conjunction with The Institute of Technology, Tallaght, The Priory Institute will host an International Summer School on Irish Catholic Identity.
History
St Mary’s Priory was founded in 1855 by the Dominicans. The Studium of the Irish Dominican Province (Dominican House of Studies) was established at Saint Mary’s Priory. In May 1864 the foundation stone for the Priory was laid by Rev. Goodman provincial of the Dominicans in Ireland. The wing connecting the church and tower was completed in 1903, another wing and a library block were completed in 1958, this is the home of The Priory Institute and where Distance Learning Programmes are delivered from.[4] In 1971 the Dominican House of Studies was affiliated to the Faculty of Theology of the Dominican Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Angelicum in Rome, the Bachelor of Sacred Theology(STB) accredited by that university was offered. From 1993 until 2001 a Diploma in Theology programme was offered, alongside other adult education and pastoral programmes. In 2000 the Studium was moved to St. Saviour's Priory, Dorset Street, Dublin, and The Priory Institute was established in Tallaght.
