The song, which talks of what the singer thinks is "the right kind of lover" for her, was written with lyrics by Ann Nesby and musically composed and produced by the team of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and James "Big Jim" Wright.
Chart information
In the US, the single reached number sixty-one on the Billboard Hot 100, number eight on the Hot R&B Songs chart.[1] "The Right Kinda Lover" was Patti LaBelle's second number one on the Hot Dance/Club Play chart.[2] Overseas, the single and also reached number fifty on the UK Top 75 and was her most successful in years. The song's video featured LaBelle performing a seductress choosing her choice of mate.
