The Swiss Bakery

The Swiss Bakery, located in Springfield and Burke, Virginia, is a full-service bakery specializing in Swiss and German products since August 2001. The bakery is committed to carrying on the culinary traditions of the Swiss in America, and carries hard-to-find gourmet products for homesick Europeans, such as the Swiss beverage Rivella, Julius Meinl and Dallmayr coffee, Wasabröd crackers, and Swiss, Austrian, and Italian wines,[1] as referenced in a Swiss review article of March 2011.[2] A Springfield Connection newspaper article [3] referenced the bakery as a good place to find Oktoberfest supplies, such as Landjaeger, Bratwurst and Weisswurst sausages.

All breads, pastries, tarts (such as Linzer Torte), cakes and cookies (such as traditional Basler Läckerli) are baked daily in the Springfield store, and ice creams and sorbets in many flavors are also made there. The breads baked by the bakery include breads that are difficult to find outside of Switzerland, such as Basler Brot, Wurzelbrot, Burebrot, Zopf and Laugenbrötchen rolls.[4] A café in the Springfield store serves breakfast and lunch specialties featuring the bakery's breads, sausages and imported cheeses. A Washingtonian magazine article of March, 2011 mentioned the bakery as place to buy Raclette cheese and rent or buy Raclette machines to prepare this traditional Swiss dish.

Baked goods and other products from The Swiss Bakery can also be found at the German Gourmet, the National Cathedral's Annual Flower Mart, the Vienna and Lorton Farmers' Markets, and are served at the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington, D.C. on Swiss National Day, and at the Goethe-Institut in Washington, D.C. Social organizations such as the Swiss Club of Washington,[5] the Alte Kameraden band, and the Liabund occasionally meet there. Paintings by Alfred Moritz, famed artist and Holocaust survivor, hang in the hallway of the bakery.

Owner Reto Weber, Master baker from the Canton of Thurgau in Switzerland, began his U.S. career demonstrating Swiss products for Albert Uster Imports, importer of fine Swiss foods. Co-owner Laurie Alleman Weber, Reto's wife, worked as a pastry chef in New York City and Washington, DC.[6] She is a member of Les Dames d'Escoffier, an association of women in the food and hospitality industry. While working under Chef Roberto Donna of Galileo, Alleman Weber earned the title of 2001 Pastry Chef of the Year[7] from the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington.
