Tunis derby
In Tunisian football, the Tunis derby is the local derby between the two major clubs in the city of Tunis, Tunisia – Club Africain and Espérance. The derby is played in Rades in the Stade Olympique de Radès stadium due to its larger capacity of 60,000 seats.[1] Before the construction of this stadium, the derby used to be played in the 45,000 seat-capacity Stade El Menzah.
History
Espérance used to be the club of the lower class and Club Africain a club for the upper class. The Club Africain headquarters are located in Bab Jedid, an old area of the city of Tunis. Espérance headquarters are located 1 km from that of Club Africain, in Bab Souika, a very popular area. A few years after the independence of Tunisia from France, Club Africain gained popularity among Tunisians. Nowadays, both clubs have a similar amount of supporters and are considered the two largest clubs in Tunisia.
