History
- 1812 – foundation of the first pharmaceutical laboratory at the Pharmaceutical Department of the Medical Faculty of Kharkiv Emperor University
- 1921 – foundation of Kharkiv Pharmaceutical Institute – the first pharmaceutical higher education institution in Ukraine
- 1992 – reorganization of KhPhI into Ukrainian Pharmaceutical Academy
- 1999 – status of the National Pharmaceutical Academy of Ukraine was received
- 2002 – reorganization into National University of Pharmacy (NUPh)
In 1805, training of pharmacy professionals began at the Department of Pharmacy and Medical Philology of the Faculty of Medical and Drug Sciences of Kharkiv Emperor University for the first time in Ukraine. First graduates received diplomas of Master of Science in Pharmacy in 5 years. In 1812, pharmaceutical laboratory was opened; training of pharmacy professionals and scientists, who were engaged in fundamental research in Organic Chemistry and Pharmacognosy, began. In 1921, Kharkiv Pharmaceutical Institute was established on the base of Medical-Pharmaceutical Faculty of Kharkiv University. Its first Rector was M.O. Valiashko, first lecturers and founders - well-known professors and scientists M. P. Krasovskii, A.D. Rozenfeld, M.S. Bokarius, G.A. Angarska, Yu.G. Borysiuk and others. Holding administrative and teaching positions, they made a significant contribution to the development of pharmaceutical education and science, training of highly qualified pharmacy specialists. Since 1937, All-Union Committee of Higher School gave Academic Council of the University the right to confer academic degrees of Candidate of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences. 90 dissertations for the degree of Doctor of Sciences and 436 dissertations for the degree of Candidate of Sciences (PhD) were defender during 70 years of existence of the Specialized Academic Council. Beginning of the 1990s is connected with active development of Kharkiv Pharmaceutical Institute. In 1992, it changed its status to Ukrainian Pharmaceutical Academy and in 1999, received the Academy received an honorary status of National Academy. By Decree of the President of Ukraine, National Pharmaceutical Academy of Ukraine was given the status of the National University of Pharmacy (NUPh) on September 18, 2002; which showed a further increase in the rating of institution, because the university differs from the academy by provision of multidisciplinary training of specialists with higher education, conducts basic and applied research, contributes to the dissemination of scientific knowledge and carries out cultural and educational activities among the population.
Current situation
Enrollment competition to the NUPh is extremely high due to a small (approx. 20) number of budget places; at the same time, University is on the list of the most popular higher education institutions in Kharkiv[1]. In March 2013, Belgorod State University and Kharkiv National University of Pharmacy agreed to cooperate [2]. At present, the University conducts training of specialists of the following educational and qualification levels: Bachelor, Specialist and Master at the following Faculties [3]:
- Pharmaceutical Faculty;
- Faculty of Economics and Management;
- Industrial Pharmacy Faculty;
- Faculty of part-time (distance) form of training;
- Medical – Pharmaceutical faculty.
