Ulmus × viminalis 'Gracilis'

Ulmus × viminalis
Hybrid parentage U. minor × U. minor 'Plotii'
Cultivar 'Gracilis'

Ulmus × viminalis Lodd. 'Gracilis' [:'slender'] is believed to be a hybrid cultivar derived from the crossing U. minor × U. minor 'Plotii'. Cultivars listed as Ulmus gracilis Hort. by Kirchner (1864),[1] and as U. scabra viminalis gracilis Hort. by Dieck (1885),[2] were considered by Green forms of U. × viminalis.[3] A 1929 herbarium specimen held at the Hortus Botanicus Leiden is labelled U. campestris var. viminalis f. gracilis (see External links below).

Description

None available. The Leiden herbarium specimen shows a leaf distinct from that of the type tree, 'Viminalis', with narrower, almost hair-like (and scarcely double) teeth (see External links below).

Pests and diseases

Trees of the U. × viminalis group are very susceptible to Dutch elm disease.

Cultivation

No specimens are known to survive.
