Uma Shankar Mishra (c. 1923 – 4 July 2016) was an Indian Independence Movement activist, politician, and President-District Congress Committee Raebareli. His political party is Indian National Congress.[1]
Biography
Early life
Uma Shankar Mishra has actively participated in National Movement in the year 1946-1947. He dedicated his life to serve the nation. He started his career as an activist and participated wholeheartedly in the agitations and revolutionary movements along with other freedom fighters.
Political life
Raebareli being associated with the Gandhi family is one of the important constituencies of Indian National Congress. He is closely associated and worked for last 4 generations with the family. Uma Shankar Mishra has carved his name in the history of Raebareli for delivering his service and loyalty towards the party and constituency.
His diligence, honesty and ability to connect with the common man have made him the leader of the masses. At this age, his activeness and vigor towards work has made him an icon among the younger politicians.
Political career
With Feroze Gandhi
Uma Shankar Mishra actively worked with Feroze Gandhi from 1951 to 1960. During the 1st Indian general election, 1951; Feroze Gandhi contested and won from Raebareli constituency. Uma Shankar Mishra closely worked with him during and post election. They were good companions.
With Indira Gandhi
In 1966, Uma Shankar Mishra along with 5 other representatives met Indira Gandhi at New Delhi to choose to contest from Raebareli. Indira Gandhi won the 4th Indian general election, 1967 and became Prime Minister of India. She contested from Raebareli again in 1971, 1977 and in 1980.
Uma Shankar Mishra was a senior leader and prominent figure in the high-profile Congress campaign in Raebareli, wherein he successfully managed her elections and constituency throughout.
In 1980, she contested and won from Raebareli and Medak, she left the Raebareli seat. Post which, Arun Nehru, Shiela Kaul and Captain Satish Sharma contested and won from Raebareli. Uma Shankar Mishra was instrumental in successful victory of Congress party in Raebareli.
He was the Leader of Cooperative movement and revolutionized the Panchayati movement for the district.
He served as Vice President of Zila Parishad, Raebareli for over 15 Years.
With Sonia Gandhi
During the regime of Captain Satish Sharma, In 2002 Uma Shankar Mishra was elected as the President of District Congress Committee.
In 2004, He invited Sonia Gandhi to contest from his Mother in law’s constituency Raebareli. Sonia Gandhi contested the Indian general election, 2004 and won by a margin of 2.5 Lakh votes. The entire constituency and election was impeccably managed by him.
In the 2006 by-elections, this almost doubled to a victory margin of 4.17 Lakh votes and the vote share also went up to 80 percent. In the Indian general election, 2009, Sonia Gandhi topped the list with a winning margin of 3.72 lakh votes. He was proven as a mastermind for Indian National Congress in Raebareli. Currently he is serving his fourth term as President of District Congress Committee.
Personal life
Uma Shankar Mishra is a true Gandhian by heart and Soul. He renders his life to the rubrics by wearing the Gandhi Khadi- Cap, Dhoti, Kurta and Sadri. Eating simple vegetarian meals and connecting to all sorts of social gatherings without fail, starting from attending political rallies, addressing public assemblies, conducting conferences with important political leaders and surveying his constituency on daily basis. He attends local public to know their issue and problems on a daily basis. His mobile and robustness motivates the team members and doggedness makes him an iconic figure and role model to all the party members.
Family
Uma Shankar Mishra’s spouse Late Smt. Rameshwari Mishra belonged to well- known Zamindar’s family from Unnao, UP. His son Prahlad Mishra is a Congress loyalist. During the 1980 by-elections, Prahlad Mishra was the active member of core group of Indira Gandhi campaign. He closely worked with Late Uma Shankar Dikshit, Makhan Lal Fotedar, Late Jagpat Dubey, Ram Lal Thakur and Late A.P Sharma. He was the Founder Secretary for Mandi Karamchari Parishad, Uttar Pradesh. He also established Raebareli Parishad.
Uma Shankar Mishra has two grandsons. Elder grandson Abhishek Mishra, is an MBA from Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad, India. He has worked in strategic senior level positions in MNC’s. Abhishek is the Member of Indian Youth Congress and a social activist with SattvaSoul an Non Government Organisation. Ashish Mishra, the younger grandson is an Engineer and currently works for a MNC and lives his passion towards photography.
