The school has changed locations since its inception. It was previously located on the Asylum campus of the University of Hartford on Elizabeth Street in Hartford, but is now in a brand new facility on Mark Twain Drive on the main campus in Hartford.
Some courses offered to freshmen include Conceptual Physics and Introduction to Engineering Design. All engineering courses are Project Lead the Way and all courses are honors level or higher; Advanced Placement courses are available in Biology, Language and Composition, and Comparative Government and Politics. The school is affiliated with the University of Hartford through a partnership. UHSSE's robotics team, the Dragons, have participated in the National FIRST Robotics Competition' for seven years. The team meets after school on a regular basis and is supervised by an engineering teacher at the school. Several students on the team are appointed as captains who assist with leadership.
Every year, incoming freshmen name their class. For example, the Class of 2017 is the Deca Class, as they are the tenth graduating class. Other examples include: Dynasty, Prodigy, Infinity, and Legendary.
