The park was an approved pre-games training camp for 13 Olympic and eight Paralympic sports for the London 2012 games.[2]
The University of Kent is in the top-ten of UK institutions for Sport Science according to the 2014 Guardian and 2015 Sunday Times and Times’ University Guide League Tables. The School are a research-active School of Sport and Exercise Science within a leading UK University (ranked in the top 16 of UK Universities). The department became the School of Sport and Exercise Science in 2012, having previously been known as the Centre for Sport Studies.
The School of Sport and Exercise Science.[3] consistently produce high-quality research that is published in world-leading journals, and as experts in the fields of sport science and sport therapy, the teaching at the school is informed by the latest research evidence. Teaching aims to balance research and theory, whilst also developing the applied skills that employers value. Students are assisted with the development of their professional skills by supporting work placement opportunities and provision of externally accredited qualifications. The school has introduced new lab facilities at Medway Park to provide a contemporary world-class learning environment for undergraduate and postgraduate students, including final year research projects. These facilities include an environmental chamber, anti-gravity treadmill, and neurophysiology testing equipment.

Research
The Research Excellence Framework (REF) announced that 50% of research within the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences is ‘World Leading’ or ‘Internationally Excellent’.
The School's research submitted for the REF has directly impacted on the performance of athletes. Our research has made a positive impression on the training and performance of coaches and athletes from British Cycling, GB Boxing, GB Swimming, Professional Football clubs, NHS, English Institute of Sport (EIS) and the Ministry of Defence. We have research projects fund-ed by grants from UEFA, World Anti-Doping Agency and the Ministry of Defence. Our specialist laboratories and clinics have recently been enhanced by a £850,000 investment to further improve the £11 million project, developing Medway Park as a regional center of sporting excellence.
Research areas
The University of Kent's School of Sport and Exercise Science has a research community divided into two multidisciplinary research groups:
- Endurance Research Group
The aim of this research group is to advance knowledge on endurance exercise and performance. For the purpose of this research group, endurance performance includes not only exercise tolerance and traditional endurance sports like road cycling, but any kind of performance in which resistance to fatigue is important. For example, resistance to mental fatigue in soldiers and repeated sprint ability in team sport players. We define endurance exercise as any form of prolonged exercise.
Academics working within the Endurance Research Group include: Prof Sam Marcora, Dr Glen Davison, Prof Louis Passfield, Andy Galbraith, Dr James Hopker, Lucy Hale, Dr Kristina Dietz, Dr Lex Mauger, Dr Carla Meijen, Dr Mark Burnley, Dr John Dickinson, James S. Hogg
- Sports Therapy, Physical Activity and Health Research Group
The aim of this research group is to apply sport and exercise sciences to research in sports therapy, health behaviour and various patient groups.
Academics working within the Sports Therapy, Physical Activity and Health Research Group include:Prof Sam Marcora, Dr Karen Hambly, Dr Glen Davison, Prof Louis Passfield, Dr James Hopker, Dr Kristina Dietz, Kyra De Coninck Berthoud, Sadie Jones, Dr Lex Mauger, Dr Carla Meijen, Dr John Dickinson, Steve Meadows, Dr Sam Winter
