"Versace on the Floor" is a song recorded by American singer and songwriter Bruno Mars for his third studio album, 24K Magic (2016). It serves as the record's first promotional single, being released on November 4, 2016 for digital download and streaming by Atlantic Records. It was provided as an instant grant track for those who pre-ordered 24K Magic.[1]

Background

"Versace on the Floor", dubbed as a seductive slow-jam, started with a "piña colada vibe", the beat was latter remixed and came up with a "epic musical track", good enough to make the final cut of the album. However, Mars was not sure since it was supposed to be a big ballad and he is not singing.[2] Henceforth a everything started from scratch and a new melody was composed, as well as new lyrics. The latest version sounded like a "Boyz II Men–ish anthem that climaxes with an indelible hook". The lyrics had to go and Mars was thinking about using them later, maybe in the fourth album.[2]

Critical reception

Will Robison from EW compared the song to "When I Was Your Man", but noticed that the track is "less wistful and more romantic" than the Unorthodox Jukebox track.[3] Rolling Stone magazine compared Mars' voice to Russell Thompkins, Jr. and found the record to have the "romance of Philly soul bands like The Stylistics". In addition, the song seemed to draw inspiration from Selena's "Dreaming of You" and Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror".[4] Several reviews from GQ found the song to be a "slow-jam throwback" sounding like a song from the 90's inspired on Boyz II Men, and its lyrics sexual. They dubbed the song as R&B.[5] Vibe's Desire Thompson felt the lyrics of the track to be "seductive" and "paired with 80’s nostalgia". She compared the song to the "early sounds of Michael Jackson".[6] Sasha Geffen of MTV felt the track was "delightfully smooth" and its "powered by a keyboard tone that should instantly give you flashbacks to eighth-grade slow dances."[7]

The record is sung in a falsetto.[4][6]
