Viky Sianipar is an Indonesian singer and composer. Sianipar had singing for Batak-language which capable of playing a variety of traditional and modern musical instruments. Sianipar has founded an company of studio music Viky Sianipar Music Centre in Manggarai, South Jakarta.
Early life
Viky Sianipar was born on June 26, 1976, in Jakarta, to Monang Sianipar and Elly Rosalina Kusuma. Since in age of 5, Sianipar had playing art music and presented him an upright piano. Sianipar later joining an classical music education in Yayasan Pendidikan Musik for focusing his musical ability in 1982. Unfortunately, Sianipar never deepen classical lessons and irresistible for listening pop and rock.
Since in junior high school, Sianipar began interest to playing band. Sianipar had performed in various school as filler show in art performances. In 1995, Sianipar later flying to San Francisco, USA for studying English language after his graduating in senior high. Finally, Sianipar get opportunity for playing his music, joining an course of blues guitar. Sianipar had time to study with George Cole, an top guitarist musician.
In addition, Sianipar had forming a band, namely MSA, who had releasing debut album Melangkah di Atas Pelangi by Universal Music and disbanded in 2002. After that, Sianipar tried to playing world music which he should combine traditional music, such as Batak, Java and Bali. Because his curiosity about Indonesian traditional notes, in 2000, Sianipar founded a band that brought for that genre.
Career
2002-2003: Toba Dream and Toba Dream II – Didia Ho
Sianipar began his debut in ethnic music. Sianipar appointed as music director for an environmentally-themed events, titled Save Lake Toba in Sumatera Utara. After his involvement in event, Sianipar began releasing debut album, titled Toba Dream and had admitted that him was damaging Batak song. Finally, Sianipar had got supported his family and colleagues for revive to playing music.
After a year later, Sianipar releasing second album, titled Didia Ho, which an trilogy series album from Toba Dream. Its album had collaborated with several musician, such as Mega Sihombing, Tongam Sirait, Sita Saigan, and Mora Lavreza for writing song and producing it.
In 2004, Sianipar had released first Christians album, titled Datanglah KerajaanMu.and in 2006 Sianipar had releasing first-Indonesian language album Satu.
2006-2008: Indonesian Beauty and Toba Dream 3
His third studio album Indonesian Beauty was released on 2006 and its bringing traditional music for Batak and ethnic of various regions. In making of his album, Sianipar had pursue for musician and his equipment to origin region.
In 2007, Sianipar had singing two Batak song “Boasa” and “Tarpaima” which both of collaboration with Dipo Pardede.
Sianipar had return releasing fourth studio album, entitled Toba Dream 3 on 2008. Its album is an trilogy series from his two previous album Toba Dream and Didia Ho and tell a manifestation for his love of culture and also environmental sustainability in Tapanuli.
2012-2013: Tobatak and Toba Dream 4
After four years vacuum, Sianipar had making spectacular project with Austrian World musician Hermann Delago and in 2012 Sianipar and Delago began releasing first collaboration album, titled Tobatak, an concept album that genre of Batak. Sianipar admitted that strive for promotion world music and Batak in international and reach honour.
In a year later, Sianipar had return to releasing fifth album, titled Toba Dream 4[1] and producing first single "Pulo Samosir" with Indonesian reggae Ras Muhamad in 2014. Sianipar had winning first major annual award Anugerah Musik Indonesia for Best Speaking Region Production Work in 2015.
2014-present: Toba Dream 5
In 2015, Sianipar had return to releasing sixth studio album, titled Toba Dream 5 in May and singing for “Toba Spirit” which appointed as original soundtrack for Batak-language film Toba Dreams and Sianipar also as composer for 2015 film Bulan Diatas Kuburan and success to winning Best Arranger Film award in Usmar Ismail Awards in 2016.
Still same of year, Sianipar had earning honoured award by ET 45 Golden Awards for his success of sales album of Toba Dream vol. 1 until Vol. 5 reaching over 1.000 copies in North Sumatera region.[2]
In addition as solo singer, Sianipar had forming a Batak group band Toba World. Sianipar with a band performing in several festival in Europe, such as Slovenia and Austria for promote foreign travel to Indonesia, especially Lake Toba.[3]
