Vladimir Lvovich Mashkov, PAR[2] (born November 27, 1963) is a Soviet and Russian theater actor and director of cinema, known to Western audiences for his work in the 2001 film Behind Enemy Lines and 2011 film Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Mashkov has also worked as a film director, producer and writer for the 2004 Russian film Papa.

Early life

Mashkov was born in Tula, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union (now Russia). His mother, Natalia, was a puppet theatre director, and his father, Lev Mashkov, was an actor.[3][4] Mashkov works for Oleg Tabakov's theatre as an actor and the main stage director, replacing Tabakov. He has appeared in a number of plays, including My Big Land, Biloxi Blues and The Inspector General. By the 1980s, Mashkov moved from Novokuznetsk to Novosibirsk, where he was soon expelled from theatre school.[5] In 1990, he graduated from the Moscow Art Theatre School.[6]

Delivered as a theater director, he staged at the Moscow theater-studio performances of Oleg Tabakov's Finest Hour Local Time.

In 1997, Vladimir Mashkov played a major role in the film The Thief, subsequently nominated for an Oscar.

He is a member of the party United Russia, and a delegate at the XXII Congress of the Party.

In 2011, at the festival of children's amateur theaters in the Siberian region of dolls "Doll in children's hands" in Novokuznetsk, Mashkov announced the establishment of the "Golden Lion" prize named after Natalya Nikiforova (his mother). This nominal premium actor will serve for the year for Best Actor and Best Actress. The first award went to theater actress Galina Romanova, named Honored Artist of Russia.

Personal life

Mashkov has one daughter, Maria, from his marriage with actress Yelena Shevchenko, from whom he is now divorced.[2] He is also an active supporter of United Russia.[7]

Grand Theft Auto IV

It was rumoured that Vladimir Mashkov was asked by Rockstar Games if he would like to play the role of the main character in the video game GTA IV, but he declined their offer so the character was resembled to look like him but was renamed Niko Bellic and was voiced by Michael Hollick.
