The Westin Convention Center Pittsburgh is a hotel in Downtown Pittsburgh, with a prominent position in the area adjacent to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center and the Cultural District. The hotel broke ground on December 6, 1984 and was originally known as the Vista International, construction "topped off" on September 26, 1985[1] and the hotel opened in 1986.[2][3] In the 1980s it hosted the annual regional ad agency awards & banquet.[4]
Notable guests
Several notable figures have chosen the hotel:
- December 6, 1991: South African leader Nelson Mandela visits the hotel for a major speech.[5][6][7]
- January, 1992: Joan Collins while touring with the Private Lives stage show.[8]
- March 25, 1992: Then governor and presidential candidate Bill Clinton visits the convention center hotel days before the commonwealth's primary as he fights back the recent Connecticut loss to Jerry Brown.[9]
- December 2, 2003: President George W. Bush visits for a major speech.[10]
- July 25, 2005: Vice President Dick Cheney visits for a major speech.[11]
Mascot
In 2016 as part of a partnership with Anthrocon, the hotel was given an anthropomorphic mascot named "Westie", a West Highland White Terrier. [12][13]
