Wiseana umbraculatus is a species of moth belonging to the family Hepialidae. It was described by Achille Guenée in 1868 from specimens collected by Richard William Fereday.[2] This species is endemic to New Zealand.[3] It was regarded as being common in Whanganui in the early twentieth century.[4]
The wingspan is 38–50 mm for males and 49–66 mm for females. The colour of the varies, but is usually fawn, pinkish fawn or infuscate. The hindwings are pinkish-fawn to yellow-fawn. Adults are on wing from September to April.[5]
Food plants for the larvae include species of grass. The larvae of W. umbraculatus are regarded as a major pasture pest.[6]
