Zac Tubbs (born May 14, 1984) is a former professional and collegiate athlete. He has earned athletic honors on the high school, collegiate, and professional level. He is the fourth member of his family to play Division I football and the third to play in the SEC.

High School Career

Tubbs attended Cullman High School in his hometown of Cullman, Alabama. Known for being tremendously strong in the weight room,[1] he garnered nearly every recognition available in his high school career, including honorable mention All-America honors. Tubbs was named to The Birmingham News Super All-State Team,[2] the Alabama Sports Writers Association Super 12 Team,[3][4] and the Mobile Press-Register Elite 18 Team.[5] The Birmingham News and Alabama Sports Writers Association both tabbed him a first-team All-State selection.[6] Tubbs started at left tackle in the Alabama vs. Mississippi All-Star Game Classic.[7] Scout.com listed Tubbs as the No.1 offensive lineman[8] and No.18 overall player in Alabama.[9]

Tubbs signed a full scholarship [10] to the University of Arkansas after being recruited by Georgia, Michigan, Stanford, and Ole Miss.[11] PrepStar on Tubbs after naming him to their All-Region Team: “A mountainous OL who is working on improving his foot speed. Tubbs is a gamer. He is very coachable and he learns quick. Zac had 107 pancake blocks and graded out at 93% his senior year. A tremendous pass blocker, Tubbs hasn’t allowed a sack his entire high school career. Zac was selected All-State, All-Region, All-County and All-Area based on his impressive performance.”[12]

College career

Tubbs was a four-year letterman and team captain for the University of Arkansas football team. He earned his first career start as a true freshman against Louisiana Lafayette[13] and was only one of two true freshmen to see playing time in the SEC Championship Game against Georgia.[14] As a sophomore, Tubbs was named to the College Football News first-team All-Bowl Team[15] after the Hogs beat Missouri in the 2003 Independence Bowl. Tubbs started the first five games of his junior season at right tackle before suffering a severe, season-ending injury.[16] Tubbs was tabbed a preseason All-SEC selection in 2005[17] and 2006.[18] Academically, he was named to the 2005-2006 Lon Farrell Academic Honor Roll.[19]

Following his senior season, Tubbs earned several first-team All-SEC honors[20][21] and was presented with the Nelson Rainey Award.[22] Arkansas Offensive Line Coach Mike Markuson on Tubbs: “He gives the team extra confidence and toughness when he’s on the field. He’s got a nasty side to him when it comes down to game day, and he can be a vocal guy. There’s an air about him that says, ‘Hey, we’re going to get it done today’. That’s why we love having him out there.”[23]

Professional career

Described as a strong run-blocking lineman who plays with a nasty attitude,[24] Tubbs signed a free agent contract with the Buffalo Bills following the 2007 NFL Draft. [25] Following his release from Buffalo, he signed with Team Arkansas in the newly formed All-American Football League.[26] Tubbs spent 2009[27] and 2010[28] with the Sioux Falls Storm of the Indoor Football League, earning second-team All-IFL honors in 2010.[29] Tubbs was part of a Storm team that were United Conference Champions in 2010; eventually, facing the Billings Outlaws in the United Bowl Championship Game.[30] He signed with the Allen Wranglers of the Indoor Football League for the 2012 season.[31]

Personal life

Tubbs’ father,[32] grandfather [33] and great uncle[34] are all members of the Cullman County Sports Hall of Fame.

Tubbs was inducted into the AAA Minor League Hall of Fame in 2013.[35]
