The 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup will be the 19th tournament of the FIBA Basketball World Cup for national men's basketball teams. This will be the 2nd tournament under the new cycle which will start in 2019. It is also expected that there will be 32 teams in the tournament. The Basketball World Cup may be hosted by Germany, Turkey, Qatar, Israel, Serbia, Russia or the Philippines.

Host selection

FIBA's Executive Committee convened a meeting on 7 June 2016, during which it approved the bidding process for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023. Countries wishing to be taken into consideration had to confirm their interest by 31 August 2016. Following the Applicant Phase and the Candidate Phase, FIBA's Central Board will ultimately announce the host(s) of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 at its end-of-year meeting in 2017.[1]
FIBA held a bidding workshop 1-2 November 2016 on hosting FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 for all interested nations.[2] The next step in the process for a National Federation will consist of submitting a bid application questionnaire in early 2017.[2]

Confirmed bids

Eleven National Federations were participating in a workshop held by FIBA on the Basketball World Cup 2023 bidding process.[2] Joint bids by member federations was approved by the FIBA Central Board starting from the 2023 edition and there is no restriction for a country from the confederation which hosted the previous edition (China of FIBA Asia) to bid for the World Cup hosting rights.[3]

National federations present at bidding workshop

On 6 October 2016 Argentine Basketball Federation presented a postulation.[4] Argentina has hosted the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 1950 and 1990.
On 30 October 2016 it was reported that Basketball Australia will submit a bid during a two-day forum in Geneva.[5] Australia hosted the FIBA Oceania Championship several times.
Germany bid - optionally a co-bid together with France - for the 2019 Basketball World Cup, but when FIBA decided the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup to be played in Asia, Germany's bid for the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup was cancelled.
Hong Kong hosted the FIBA Asia Championship in 1983.
On 8 September 2016 the Israel Basketball Association announced it submitted its paperwork to host the competition.[6] They are one of the host nations for the EuroBasket 2017.
Japan has hosted the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2006.
The Philippines is considering to bid for the 2023 FIBA World Cup after it lost its 2019 bid to China. The Philippines is exploring the possibility of bidding with another country (Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea) leaning on co-bidding the World Cup with a Southeast Asian country.[3] The Philippines hosted the 1978 FIBA World Championship, three editions of the FIBA Asia Championship (1960, 1973, 2013), and also hosted one of the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments.
Poland has hosted Eurobasket in 1963 and 2009.
Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutko announced on 20 April 2015 that he is in talks with the governing body of basketball for the country to bid to host the 2023 World Cup.[7]
On 14 September 2016 Basketball Federation of Serbia announced to host the competition.[8][9] Serbia co-hosted three editions of the EuroBasket (1961, 1975, 2005), and also hosted one of the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments.
Like Germany, Turkey also bid originally for 2019 and was therefore cancelled when FIBA decided the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup to be played in Asia. Turkey also hosted the 2010 FIBA World Championship and 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women. 2023 is the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Turkish Republic.

Earlier potential bids

Qatar entered a bid when FIBA asked to bid for the 2019 and 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cups and specified that it was the only nation interested solely for 2023. They hosted the 2005 FIBA Asia Championship. However Qatar was not present at the FIBA bidding workshop for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.[2]

Format

It is expected that the format (including Qualifiers) will be followed from 2019.
