Arthur Blackman (13 October 1853 6 April 1908) was an English cricketer active in the 1870s and 1880s. A right-handed batsman and right-arm roundarm medium pace bowler, Blackman made twenty appearances in first-class cricket, playing for three counties.

Career

Born at Dartford, Kent, Blackman made his first-class debut for Surrey against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in 1878, in what was his only first-class appearance for that county.[1] The following season he began playing for Kent, making his debut for the county against Sussex. He made two further first-class appearances in 1879, against England, and for the Gentlemen of Kent against the Gentlemen of England.[1] He played one final match for Kent in 1880 against Yorkshire.[1] Blackman began playing for Sussex in 1881, making his debut for the county against Nottinghamshire at the County Ground, Hove, with him making a further appearance in that season against Surrey.[1] He didn't feature in first-class cricket in 1882, but did return to play for Sussex in 1883, making three appearances, following this up with one appearance in 1884, and four in both 1885 and 1886. He made a final first-class appearance for the county in 1887 against Lancashire at Old Trafford.[1] Fifteen of Blackman's twenty first-class appearances came for Sussex, for whom he scored 287 runs, averaging 11.95, with a high score of 73 against Hampshire in 1885.[2][3] As a bowler he took 7 wickets in his first-class career, averaging 37.57, with best figures of 2/20.[4] He was also described by Wisden as "a good field at cover-point".[5]

Outside of cricket, Blackman was a school master. He died at Preston, Sussex on 6 April 1908.
