Location of Curral Velho in Cape Verde

Curral Velho (Cape Verde Creole: Kurral Bédj’) is a deserted village in the southern part of the island of Boa Vista, Cape Verde. The village is situated on the south coast, around 25 km southeast of the island capital of Sal Rei. The nearby islet Ilhéu de Curral Velho and the adjacent coast are an important area for birds,^[1] designated a Ramsar wetland of international importance on July 18, 2005. The countryside is also a protected area^[2] and covers the lower part of Ribeira do Melo and the old houses of Curral Velho, São Domingos and Prazeres, made of traditional architecture, many went into decay and into ruins. The area is 1,635 ha and its perimeter is 24,926 meters. It also includes the salt marsh in the east.

Recently in 2010, a new hotel resort was constructed in front of the beach and contains some hotels and several villas, road access were only tracks and pathways connected until the new Rabil-Curral Velho road would be constructed in 2009 and opened in 2011 as a paved road and is the southern terminus of the road. Tourism is now the main industry of the hamlet but it is not active as the western part of the island.
