David Seyfried Herbert, 19th Baron Herbert
David John Seyfried-Herbert, 19th Baron Herbert (born 3 March 1952) is a British peer.[1]
Biography
He was born David John Seyfried, the son of Captain John Seyfried, Royal Horse Guards, and Lady Cathleen Eliot, daughter of the 6th Earl of St Germans. Lord St Germans's wife was Lady Blanche Somerset, daughter of the 9th Duke of Beaufort, descendant of William Herbert from whom the Barony of Herbert originated.
He was educated at Harrow School. He married, in 1975, Jane Bishop, daughter of Dr Ian Bishop. They have one son, Oliver Richard Seyfried Herbert, born 17 June 1976, and one daughter, Charlotte Sophia Caroline Seyfried Herbert, born 27 October 1977, educated at Wycombe Abbey School and Oriel College, Oxford. In 2007 she married Julian Collett and they have two sons: Rollo Huxley Herbert Collett, born 14 July 2008 and Caspian Huxley Herbert Collett, born November 2009.
Oliver was educated at Harrow School and St Bartholomew's Hospital. In 2003 he married Sarah (Sally) Victoria Fergusson, daughter of Ian Fergusson FRCS, and they have one son: Oscar James Seyfried Herbert, born 27 November 2004 and two daughters, Coco Florence Seyfried Herbert, born 23 July 2007 and Phoebe Sophia Seyfried Herbert, born 12 June 2008.
In 2002 the Queen terminated the abeyance of the Barony of Herbert in his favour.[2] He is also a co-heir, with one moiety, to the Barony of Botetourt.
Lord Herbert is a distant grandnephew of King Richard III through his maternal grandmother, Lady Blanche Somerset. Lady Blanche was a descendant of the Dukes of Beaufort through her father, the 9th Duke of Beaufort. The 1st Duke of Beaufort was a descendant of King Richard's brother, George Plantagenet, 1st Duke of Clarence and his wife Lady Isabel Neville, through the Pole family, a daughter of which married Francis Hasting, Earl of Huntingdon; Hastings daughter Elizabeth married Edward Somerset, 4th Earl of Worcester whose male line descendants became the Dukes of Beaufort. The Beauforts were also direct descendants in the male line from Edward III, through John of Gaunt and the legitimised Somerset line of the Beaufort family, thus Lord Herbert is descended from both the Houses of Lancaster and York.
Lord Herbert will be representing the Lancastrian peers who fought at the Battle of Bosworth during the re-interment of King Richard on 26 March 2015 at Leicester Cathedral. The descendants of the York and Lancastrian peers that were present at Bosworth will be accompanying the funeral cortege and will escort the body of King Richard into the Cathedral.[3]

- ↑ By the laws of succession to ancient English baronies, daughters and co-heiresses inherit equal shares. Lady Blanche's daughters or their heirs inherited equal shares in the barony; however, David Seyfried was the elder son and thus sole heir of his mother, the younger daughter. The elder daughter had two surviving daughters who became co-heiresses to their mother's moiety or one-half. For details, see discussions on the Usenet group alt.talk.royalty.
