The Foundation University, Islamabad (known as FUI), is a private university located in Islamabad, Pakistan. It has three additional campuses in Rawalpindi, Punjab, Pakistan.

The university offers undergraduate, post-graduate, and doctoral studies in medical sciences, humanities, fine arts, philosophy, law and various registered academic programmes. Its primary financial endowment and funding are sponsored by the Fauji Foundation, run under the auspicious of Pakistan Army.

FUI has been established as a private sector university, sponsored by the Fauji Foundation which is the largest welfare organization in the country. FUI was granted its charter by the Federal Government vide Ordinance No. LXXXVIII of 2002.

In a university category list issued by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in 2005, Foundation University was placed in the "A" category, along with other top ranking universities of Pakistan such as LUMS, NUST. According to the ranking (2013) of HEC, Foundation University has been placed in the highest W-4 category. In the General category of Higher Education Institutes in Pakistan, FU was ranked 45th with a score of 41.17.[1]

Foundation University Rawalpindi Campus

The Institute was established in December 1998. Following the grant of the charter to the Foundation University, FURC became one of its constituent institutes in October 2002. Prior to this, it was affiliated with IBA and UET respectively. FURC became one of its constituent institutes in October 2002. Prior to this it was affiliated with IBA and UET respectively. FURC has four faculties: Faculty of Engineering & IT and Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Business and Economics and Faculty of Arts and Science. This Institute has the unique distinction to be the pioneer in getting its Software Engineering Programme accredited by the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC). The Telecommunication Engineering Program, batches 2003, 2004 and 2005 have also been accredited by PEC. The Management Sciences Programmes of study are duly accredited by HEC.

The institute was headed by Professor Dr. Aftab, known for his contributions in the Computer Science departments of Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute (GIKI) Topi, FAST Islamabad Campus (as founder) and LUMS. Now the institution is headed by Brig Akhtar Nawaz Malik.

Foundation University Medical College

The Foundation University Medical College (FUMC) was established in 2000. The Medical College is recognized by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC). The College has 21 departments of which 7 pertain to basic sciences and 14 to clinical sciences. FUMC has a permanent faculty of 118 and visiting/honorarium faculty of 23. The college takes in 150 students per year. The college presently has 571 students. Four batches of MBBS comprising 384 students have graduated through 2009.

The Academic Wing has two divisions, viz., Basic Medical Sciences Division and Clinical Sciences Division respectively. The college is housed in a complex of its own with boys and girls hostels located within the same premises.

Introduction of internationally accepted problem based learning methodology

FUMC has introduced an internationally accepted Integrated Curriculum from 2009 in place of a discipline based curriculum on the instructions of PM & DC. World bodies endorsing this integrated curriculum include the General Professional Education for Physicians, the Canadian Medical Council, the World Federation for Medical Education and the General Medical Council (UK).

FUMC is the fourth institution after Aga Khan University, Shifa Medical College and Army Medical College to introduce this teaching methodology in Pakistan.

Collaborations and memberships

The University of Yamanashi Faculty of Medicine (Japan), signed an academic agreement with FUMC for research collaboration, faculty development and student exchange in 2005.

The college is listed in the International Medical Education Directory and is a member of the International Association of Medical Regulatory Authority. The college has been included in the World Directory of Medical Schools by WHO, making its students eligible to appear in the United States Medical Licensing Examination and the United Kingdom Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board.
