José Silvestre

José Silvestre is the name of two fictional characters in H. Rider Haggard's adventure novel King Solomon's Mines. The elder of the two is a 16th-century Portuguese nobleman who first reached the Kukuana kingdom and the lost mines before dying. The second, who lives in the 19th century time period of the novel, is his descendant. The latter José lost his life after trying to cross the desert, but not before leaving the map of the road to the mines with the elephant hunter Allan Quatermain.
