Baltimore, Maryland First Roman Catholic cathedral constructed in the United States on "Cathedral Hill" (facing west towards future Cathedral Street between West Mulberry and Franklin Streets and future neighborhood of Mount Vernon-Belvedere-Mount Royal) in "Howard's Woods" north of the town on the "Belvidere" estate of Col. John Eager Howard, (1752-1827), who donated the land (along with the nearby landmark Washington Monument). Howard, the former commander of the famed "Maryland Line" of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War, was a notable Baltimorean and civic leader in the latter half of its first century. Designed by British-American architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe, (1764-1820), the "Baltimore Cathedral" design selected reflected a Greek Revival style of architecture (which was chosen by the prelate over another Gothic Revival plan). With the cornerstone laid in July 1806 to its dedication in 1821, by the second archbishop, and by following decades had two twin cupola towers (with a distinctive "onion-top" copper-plated style of the Eastern Orthodox churches) added along with the front portico of Grecian columns by the 1870s. Old Baltimore Cathedral named a minor basilica in 1937. At its 1821 dedication, succeeded the previous St. Peter's Pro-Cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore, the first Roman Catholic congregation/parish in the town of Baltimore (1770) at the northwestern corner of North Charles Street and what later became West Saratoga Street, with an attached rectory and surrounding cemetery. Built of red brick and in a plain Georgian/Federal style. When Father John Carroll, (1735-1815), was elected by a synod of the few American priests and appointed in 1789, by Pope XXX and went to England to be ordained the following year in the chapel at Lulworth Castle, in Dorset, upon his return and installation as primate in St. Peter's and established his episcopal see there in 1790, with the first official synod of priests in the U.S.A. held there the following year and the ordination of a bishop coadjutor occurring later with that of Fr. Leonard Neale, (1746-1817).
