List of Cricket World Cup five-wicket hauls
In cricket, a five-wicket haul (also known as a "five–for" or "fifer")[1] refers to a bowler taking five or more wickets in a single innings. This is regarded by the critics as a notable achievement,[2] and there have been only 54 instances of a bowler taking a five-wicket haul in World Cup tournaments. The Cricket World Cup is the international championship of One Day International (ODI) cricket. The event is organised by the sport's governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC), and is held once in every four years.[3][4] Players from all the teams that have permanent ODI status—with the exception of Bangladesh—have picked up five-wicket hauls.[lower-alpha 1][6] In addition, players from four teams that are associate members of the ICC have taken fifers in World Cups.[lower-alpha 2][6]
Starting with the inaugural edition in 1975, a total of 49 bowlers have taken five-wicket haul in World Cup tournaments as of 2015.[7] Australian bowler Dennis Lillee was the first to take a fifer when he took 5 wickets for 34 runs against Pakistan during the third match of the world cup.[8] His compatriot Gary Gilmour followed with two consecutive fifers in the semi-final and final of the tournament, doing so against England and West Indies respectively. His 6 wickets for 14 runs against the former was named the "Best Bowling Performance" in ODIs in an all-time list released by the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack in 2002.[9] Joel Garner of West Indies became the second and last bowler to achieve a fifer in a final when he took 5 wickets for 38 runs against England in 1979 final. The performance ensured West Indies' victory, and helped them earn their second title.[10]
The 1992 edition was the only tournament where no five-wicket hauls were taken, while the 2003 tournament had a record 12 five-wicket hauls taken by 11 different bowlers.[11] Five bowlers—Gilmour, Ashantha de Mel, Glenn McGrath, Vasbert Drakes and Shahid Afridi—have performed this feat twice in the history of the tournament. McGrath was the only bowler to take a five-wicket haul in more than one World Cup. His 7 wickets for 15 runs against Namibia remains the best bowling figures by a bowler in the history of the tournament. The most recent five- wicket haul was taken by Australia cricketer Mitchell Starc in the 2015 World Cup; he took 6 wickets for 28 runs against New Zealand.[8]
