The Galle International Stadium is a 17,000 capacity cricket stadium situated in Galle, Sri Lanka. The first Test match was between hosts Sri Lanka and New Zealand on 3 June 1998.[1] Basically it is used for Test matches.

In total the ground has been the venue for 28 Test matches,[2] 7 One-Day International matches.[3]

In cricket, a five-wicket haul (also known as a "five-for" or "fifer")[4][5] refers to a bowler taking five or more wickets in a single innings. This is regarded as a notable achievement.[6]

The first bowler to take a five-wicket haul in a Test match at Galle International Stadium was Kumar Dharmasena, who took 6/72 in 1998 for Sri Lanka against New Zealand on very first Test played at the ground.[1] The best bowling figures to date were achieved by Muttiah Muralitharan who took 7/26 for Sri Lanka against England in 2003.[7] There have been a total of 43 five-wicket hauls in Test matches at the ground. Muralitharan has taken 11 Test five-wicket hauls, which is the highest by a bowler at Galle.

The first One Day International was played at Galle International Stadium between Sri Lanka and India on 25 June 1998, where the Match abandoned without a ball bowled.[8] Since then there have been only single five-wicket haul, which was achieved by Sanath Jayasuriya who took 5/28 for Sri Lanka against Australia in 1989.[9]
