Margaret Edward Boyle (May 5, 1905 – September 11, 1995) was a Scottish mathematician born in Kirkden Manse, Angus, on May 5, 1905. She attended Forfar Academy for four years where she received the Dux Award, Valedictorian equivalent, she then moved on to University of St Andrews. After graduating she taught mathematics at Dalkeith High School, she settled there for a while. She and her close friend from college both joined the Edinburgh Mathematical Society. She eventually stopped teaching later on because of an illness and married David Dorward. She spent the rest of her life as a wife and mother with her family. Later died on September 11, 1995.[1]

School and College Life

Boyle received her secondary education at Forfar Academy where she became school leader in 1921 and in the same year won a scholarship for four years in the University of St Andrews Bursary Competition.[2]

At the University of St Andrews, she had a fellow mathematics student friend named Agnes Mudie. Both friends graduated in 1925 with being awarded Masters of Art Degrees (Class I).[3]

Career and Profession

After the graduation Boyle taught mathematics at Dalkeith High School. While she taught mathematics, she lodged with a family she kept up with until later in life. Later she lived with her friend Agnes Mudie at Buchanan Hostel, East Suffolk Road, Edinburgh, and both joined the Edinburgh Mathematical Society in June 1926.

Health and Illness

Boyle gave up teaching due to illness. In January 1930, she wrote to the Hon. Secretary of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society that due to a decline in health, she left Edinburgh and was not likely to take up mathematics again and must let her membership to the society lapse.[1]

Family, relocation, and Last Years

She married David Gardyne Dorward, the dominie, a schoolmaster, of Logie Pert School, near Montrose in North Angus in April 1931. They both had two sons, the elder being David Campbell Dorward who became a well-known classical composer,[4] and younger being John Dorward.[5]

In 1938 she and her family moved to Monikie near Dundee, where her husband was appointed the dominie of the local school, Monikie Primary School.

Her close friend, Agnes Mudie, became known to the family as 'Auntie' Nancy. Both again started attending St Andrews University Hall Association for reunions with fellow-residents. In 1971, she moved to live with her son David and his wife in Edinburgh after the death of her husband, where she died in September 1995.
