New York Film Academy – School of Film and Acting (NYFA) is a for-profit film school and acting school based in New York City, Los Angeles, and across the world. The NY Film Academy was founded in 1992 by Jerry Sherlock, a former film, television and theatre producer.[1] It was originally located at the Tribeca Film Center. In 1994, NYFA moved to the former Tammany Hall building in Union Square. After 23 years of occupancy, the Academy relocated from Tammany Hall to Battery Park in October 2015.[2]
As of 2012, the school has 400+ employees and over 7,000 students per year.[3] NYFA offers master, bachelor, and associate degrees, as well as one- and two-year conservatory programs, short-term workshops, and youth programs and summer camps in filmmaking, acting for film, photography, fashion photography, 3D animation, game design, producing, screenwriting, digital filmmaking, cinematography, documentary, broadcast journalism, musical theatre, music video, digital editing, graphic design, virtual reality, ESL, and illustration programs at various locations throughout the world.[4]
The New York Film Academy's philosophy is based on a "learning by doing" approach. NYFA founder Jerry Sherlock explained to the New York Times in 2005[5] that he opened the school after hearing interest from parents and older relatives of aspiring young filmmakers, and that he wanted to focus on practical experience.
Degree programs, workshops and locations
NYFA's programs include film directing, film producing, screenwriting, cinematography, film editing, documentary film making, acting, animation, photography, game design, musical theatre, graphic design, virtual reality, ESL, and illustration. In 2007 NYFA partnered with NBC News to start a program in digital journalism.[6] In 2010 the contract between NYFA and NBC expired, but the Broadcast Journalism programs at NYFA continue to be offered with many of the original faculty. Partnerships
Since 2007, the New York Film Academy has been collaborating with museums and major art institutions to organize cultural and filmmaking education initiatives for teens and young adults. The New York Film Academy's partnership with the Metropolitan Museum of Art is in its fourth year. Working closely with each individual institution, the Film Academy contributes resources in curriculum development, teaching staff, and equipment to deliver programs that teach students the creative art of the moving image, as well as the importance and value of all forms of art and the institutions that preserve, protect and display them. Partnering institutions include:

Corporate partnerships
- Rolling Stone Magazine and the New York Film Academy partnered together to offer a series of Rolling Stone Music Video Workshops. The workshops immersed students in cinematography, directing, screenwriting, producing, and editing, with students creating their own original music videos. While the partnership with Rolling Stone came to a close in 2016, NYFA continues to offer intensive music video workshops.[12]
- In 2014, NASA and the New York Film Academy announced a new initiative that would enlist students to create original audiovisual materials to raise awareness about the development of the James Webb Space Telescope as part of the Academy’s STEAM initiative.[13]
- The New York Film Academy offers a series of ongoing REDucation Workshops to students that take place around the world. The workshops—overseen by RED Digital Cinema Camera Company’s certified instructors—are aimed at working professionals as well as those just starting out in their film careers to help them master the RED EPIC or DRAGON cameras.[14]
- Sony Animation[15] and the New York Film Academy established a relationship to create a special acting workshop to train Sony animators to better understand the actor's process and appropriate character behavior. The animators were taught acting techniques, scene analysis and beat breakdown from the actor's perspective, as well as character development to enhance their overall visual storytelling abilities.
- Time Warner Cable's Connect A Million Minds and the New York Film Academy partnered together at its Union Square headquarters. Students from East Side Community High School and Marte Valle Secondary School in the Lower East Side participated in a workshop to learn about the significance of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills required in the film industry to bring movies to life.[16]
- The New York Jets and the New York Film Academy partnered together in 2012 to start a brand new hands-on Sports Photography Program.[17] The program offered two 16-week hands-on immersion workshops in Sports Photography and Sports Broadcasting for sports fans and aspiring media professionals in a real-world sports environment.
Faculty
NYFA draws faculty who are active, working professionals in their fields, many of whom are award winners or have formerly taught at such prestigious institutions as Tisch School of the Arts, Columbia University, AFI Conservatory, University of Southern California, Stanford University, Harvard University, Yale University and University of California Los Angeles.[18] Notable faculty members include director Adam Nimoy, game designer Chris Swain, director Claude Kerven, screenwriter Jim Jennewein, actress Lynda Goodfriend and actor/director Michael Zelniker.
Notable guest lectures
Many film and television industry professionals have appeared as guest speakers at the New York Film Academy. They include:[19] Steven Spielberg, Glenn Close, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Al Pacino, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ron Howard, Doug Liman, Molly Shannon, Ben Stiller, Kevin Spacey, Ben Kingsley, Mira Nair, Seth Rogen and other people from the entertainment industry.
