Piano Sextet (Mendelssohn)
Felix Mendelssohn's Piano Sextet in D major, Op. 110, for piano, violin, two violas, cello, and double bass was composed in May 1824.
Structure
The work has four movements:
- Allegro vivace (D major, 4/4)
- Adagio (F-sharp major, 3/4)
- Menuetto (D minor, 6/8 - trio in F major)
- Allegro vivace (D major, 4/4 - final section, reprising the minuet, is surprisingly in D minor but nevertheless ends with a long Picardy third)
A typical performance lasts 30 minutes.
