Regents International School Pattaya, formerly known as The Regent's School Pattaya, Thailand, is a British International School situated on the Gulf of Thailand which offers British and international education to students age 2 1/2 until the age of 18 (Nursery to Year 13). Though most of its students are day students, there are many students that reside on campus as it is also a boarding school.

The school became a member of Nord Anglia Education (NAE), an international education provider, in August 2012, making Regents International School Pattaya the first school in Southeast Asia to become part of the organisation.[1]

The school is a member of the Round Square organisation and bases its core ethos on the philosophies of the association.[2]

History

Founded in 1995, it began as a small school with 40 students but has since grown to possess a student body of over 1,100 pupils, with over 100 of those boarding on site. The school began as a response to cater for the growing number of expatriate families whose jobs were based in the Eastern Seaboard of Thailand.

After 1995 the school saw a five-year period in which it grew rapidly. In the same year St. George’s Boarding House for Senior Boys and St. Andrews for Juniors was erected and the student body then stood at 440.

The transition into the new decade saw the school become a member of several organisations that it remains a part of to this day. In 2000 it joined FOBISSEA (Federation of British International Schools in South East Asia, now FOBISIA (Federation of British International Schools in Asia))[3] and in 2001 Regents was inaugurated into the Round Square Group.

Demographics

As of 2014 the school's 1,100 students represent 50 nationalities, with the top 5 including Thai (28%), British (12%), South Korean (11%), Russian (8%) and Australian (7%).[4] As of 2010 the Thai and British students, with the same percentages, made up the largest groups in the student body.[5]

Most of the teaching staff are British, but there are also Australians, New Zealanders, Canadians and Americans present. Most faculty are native speakers of English.[6]

Curriculum

The school's curriculum is based on the English National Curriculum until key stage 3. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma is offered to sixth form students and enables them to be able to apply to universities all over the world.[7][8]

Facilities

The school includes a 25-metre swimming pool, a full sized rugby and football pitch, a double gymnasium, all weather sports running track, and a 256-seat theatre.[9]

Boarding Houses and House Systems

The school has four modern boarding houses; Elizabeth House (Junior Girls), Victoria House (Senior Girls) St. Andrews House (Junior Boys) and St. George's House (Senior Boys) are all located on school grounds and cater for students from Year 3 to Year 13.

All students throughout the school, from Early Years to Sixth Form, are members of one of the four house teams of the school. Each are represented by a colour, Region of Thailand and now, the most recent addition, an animal. These houses regularly take part in house competitions throughout the academic year where points are earned. These points are tallied at the end of the year when a winner is announced.

Round Square

The school was formally inducted into Round Square at St. Philip's College in Alice Springs, Australia, where the 2001 International Round Square Conference was hosted. Since the school joined Round Square in 2001 it has since applied Kurt Hahn's educational ethos into its holistic educational structure. Students take part in community service projects, practice democracy through student council and are taught to be aware of social issues.

In the 2010/2011 academic year Regents International School Pattaya hosted the Round Square International Conference, under the theme "We Walk Together" which brought together 750 delegates from over 20 different countries.[10]
