Content

The lyrics chronicle a lost promise; the singer talks about how a relationship failed and he wonders "how the hell'd we wind up like this". He wishes that they could discuss their issues and that the relationship will come back someday but that someday never comes because it's a lost promise.

Music video

In the music video, we get the same impression that the song is about a failed relationship, a boyfriend played by Clint Carleton and the woman played by Daniella Evangelista: a woman bursts into tears after reading a newspaper with someone who appears to be her boyfriend close by her side. As she leaves the house with a suitcase (echoing the lyrics "I wish you'd [...] unpack your suitcase"), we can see the boyfriend stepping into spilled milk without leaving any traces or footprints. Later in the street, the woman leaves crying in their jeep while the boyfriend is apparently trying to convince her to come back, but she doesn't notice him and just cries more. She drives off and as she looks into her rear-view mirror, she can only see an empty street where her boyfriend was standing only seconds ago. The boyfriend chases her through the street and catches up to her jeep (driving carelessly) but only to witness a semi-truck crashing into it at the last second, her jeep running a red light, killing her in front of his eyes at the intersection. Her spirit resurrects and she can be seen walking from the crowd of spectators to her boyfriend and smiling. The two reunite with tearful hugs and they walk away together. As they pass a newspaper vending machine, the news reveals that it was her boyfriend who died in another accident the day before (a bridge accident). Therefore, it can be said that the reason nobody can see, hear, or notice him is because he was just a spirit from the previous accident at the time. Meanwhile, the band is playing in a room near a glass window.

On an alternate version, the woman walks away from the accident alive and unharmed instead of a ghost of her. The man then hugs her from behind, but she walks away from him and he disappears.[1]

Usage in the media

The song appears on the game Karaoke Revolution Volume 3, Cold Case TV series in Season 4 episode "Saving Sammy", the film Going the Distance, in the first episode of the sixth and last season of Third Watch, "More Monsters" and on the ending of Torque.

The song was also used as the opening theme for the British TV series Spooks when it was aired in North America under the name MI-5.
