Wednesday Campanella (水曜日のカンパネラ Suiyōbi no Kanpanera, "Suiyōbi no Campanella") is a Japanese electronic music group formed in 2012. The group consists of KOM_I, Hidefumi Kenmochi, and Dir.F.
History
Formation
In 2011, Dir.F and Kenmochi first met at Design Festa Tokyo. As a label manager at Tsubasa Records, Dir.F planned to start a new music project with provisional female members, while Kenmochi intended to produce new music differing from his instrumental music after the 3.11 Disaster in Japan. The two named the group as ‘’Suiyōbi no Campanella’’. In 2012, Dir.F met KOM_I at their mutual videographer friend’s house party and invited her to join the group. Suiyoubi no Campanella uploaded ‘Oz’ and ‘Kukai’ to YouTube in July. In November their first CD ‘’Suiyōbi no Campanella Demo 1’’ was sold at Design Festa Tokyo Autumn and the other member left the group around this time. Kenmochi and Dir. F subsequently became members of Suiyōbi no Campanella.
2013-present On 11 March 2013, KOM_I reluctantly started live performances alone. The first show took place at Shimokitazawa ERA. Their first mini album entitled ‘’Crawl to Saka Agari’’(Crawl and [Back hip circle] “クロールと逆上がり”) was released in May 2013. The album was exclusively released at Village Vanguard Shimokitazawa. The title refers to the things KOM_I is not good at, at her age.
In September 2013 Wednesday Campanella played at Ringo Ongakusai Festival. To perform at this festival was the first goal for the group at the beginning. KOM_I played several shows at several venues like shuttle buses with apple candy headed character, “Ringo-ame Man”. October 2013, “Rashomon”(羅生門) was released. From this mini album, releases of Suiyoubi no Campanella are distributed by Tower Records stores. In March 2014 “Cinema Jack”(“シネマジャック”) was released. The songs in this album are produced featuring serial web interviews in online music store, OTOTOY. On 5 August, "Momotaro” was premiered on J-WAVE. This song made Suiyoubi no Campanella popular among radio listeners.
Suiyoubi no Campanella released their fourth mini album, “Watashi wo Onigashima ni Tsuretette”(“Take me to Onigashima Island” 私を鬼が島に連れてって) in die-cut CD edition. In 2015, Suiyoubi no Campanella released ‘’Triathlon EP’’, which included 3 songs. In this EP, different artists produced each song. In addition to Kenmochi, OORUTAICHI and OBKR from N.O.R.K. recorded songs. In March 2016, at their first American show at SXSW, KOM_I announced that their next album would be released around June by Warner records. In April KOM_I became regular DJ for radio program ‘’’ Spark’’ on J-Wave.
Members
- KOM_I (コムアイ komuai) - performer, singer
- Hidefumi Kenmochi (ケンモチヒデフミ) - music producer
- Dir.F.(ディレクター・エフ) - director
Name
The name ‘’Suiyōbi no Campanella’’ is in reference to their usual meeting day, and the mixing of Kanji, Katakana, Hiragana was preferred for the ego surfing of the group. On 15 March 2016, Suiyoubi no Campanella performed at SXSW under “Wednesday Campanella” moniker for their first gig in the US.
Live Performances
KOM_I appears alone on stage, at events and at promotional occasions. She took karaoke-style live. Kenmochi and Dir.F thought men were undesirable for the group to appear on stage when they discussed some Japanese duet groups.
Music
Kenmochi is mainly in charge of music production, composing, arranging, and song writing. The concept of the group that Kenmochi and Dir.F had in the early years was folklore style Perfume (Japanese band). Each song has certain themes referring to historical events, great persons, or pop culture. The lyrics Kenmochi writes have seemingly deep meanings, however they are generally senseless. KOM_I had no music career until she joined Wednesday Campanella. According to KOM_I, "I never thought I would sing a song at over twenty years of age, I thought I would be an office worker as people around my age are." KOM_I performed as she was told to and did not put a word for producing music, but she positively participates after making ‘’Rashomon’’, The mismatch of her voice and hip-hop was preferred by Kenmochi.
