The Devil You Know, previously working titled as New World is an American period drama television pilot created by Jenji Kohan for HBO. Written by Kohan, Bruce Miller and Tracy Miller, set around Salem witch trials in 17th century in New England. According to James Marsters, the pilot was not picked up as a series.[1]

Production
On December 4, 2013, it was announced that Jenji Kohan was developing a period drama for HBO, and she would write the script along with Bruce Miller and Tracy Miller.[5] Kohan and Bruce would executive produce, while Tracy would supervising the production with Lionsgate Television handling the production.[5] On February 19, 2015, drama was titled as New World and Gus Van Sant was also on board to executive produce along with Tara Herrmann, while Van Sant would also direct the pilot.[6] On March 3, 2015, it was re-titled to The Devil You Know.[2]
Casting
On March 3, 2015, Eddie Izzard, Nadia Alexander, and Ismenia Mendes were cast to play Thomas Putnam, Ann Putnam Jr., and Mercy Lewis, respectively.[2] On March 13, 2015, more cast was announced which included Ever Carradine as Ann Putnam Sr., Damien Molony as Robert Putnam, Julian Rhind-Tutt as Minister Samuel Parris, Matthew James Thomas as Henry Paine, Nigel Lindsay as Dr. Griggs, Ewen Bremner as Israel Porter, Karen Gillan as Jane Porter, Hannah Nordberg as Betty Parris, Naian Gonzalez Norvind as Samuel Parris' niece, and Zawe Ashton as Parris' slave.[3] Recurring cast included Will Pullen as Moses Cooper, Kate Nash as Bridget Bishop, Seana Kofoed, Mary Mouser as Earth Fenn, Beanie Feldstein as Lydia Harris, and Mia Barron as Bathshua Pope.[3] On March 27, 2015, James Marsters was set to appear for a guest role as Reverend George Burroughs.[4]
Filming
Filming began in mid-March 2015 at the Rebecca Nurse Homestead in Danvers, Massachusetts.[7] Another location used was VOC replica ship 'd'Halve Maen'. This was her latest action before her journey to Hoorn, Netherlands.
