The Yamaha Tracer 900 (FJ-09 in North America) is a sport touring motorcycle first offered in 2015. The 3-cylinder engine comes from the MT-09 (FZ-09 in North America).

Design and development

The production manager of Yamaha, Shun Miyazawa indicated that consumers have moved away from sport motorcycles and opted instead for unfaired/naked models and the sport touring style. After Yamaha stopped production of the sport touring model TDM 900 in 2011 (only offered in the early 1990s in North America), many people view the Tracer 900 as the TDM 900 successor.

The technology of the Tracer 900 comes directly from the MT-09, adding a partial fairing and windscreen, a bigger fuel tank, ABS brakes, traction control, and electronic throttle modes called "D-Mode." The board is exactly the same of the XT1200Z Super Ténéré. The Tracer 900 also has LED lights at the headlights and at the rear light. The rear subframe is bigger and more robust and incorporates factory supports for lateral cases. The rear shock is a bit longer and the seat and handlebar are higher compared to the MT-09. The back and front suspension travel is longer.

From 2016, the bike has been renamed to Tracer 900 from MT-09 Tracer, as with the introduction of the Tracer 700 which is based on MT-07 (FZ-07 in North America).
