The Fremont County Courthouse, located in Sidney, Iowa, United States, was built in 1889. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 as a part of the County Courthouses in Iowa Thematic Resource.[1] The courthouse is the second structure to house court functions and county administration.
History
The first county seat in Fremont County was Austin and court sessions were held in a storeroom. The county seat moved to Sydney in 1851 and commissioners erected a two-story brick building that featured a tower and a tin roof in 1860 for $40,000.[2] The structure was heavily damaged in an explosion in 1863. While the county spent money to repair the building the roof and second floor were too badly damaged.[3] The current courthouse is a two-story structure of brick with granite columns flanking the main entrance constructed in 1889. It features a central entry in a squat tower and several shed dormers along the roofline.
