Leland is a village in LaSalle County, Illinois, United States. The population was 970 at the 2000 census. It is part of the OttawaStreator Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

A post office called Leland has been in operation since 1857.[1] The village was named for Edwin S. Leland.[2]

Geography

Leland is located at 41°36′51″N 88°47′53″W / 41.61417°N 88.79806°W / 41.61417; -88.79806 (41.614112, -88.797962).[3]

According to the 2010 census, Leland has a total area of 0.53 square miles (1.37 km2), all land.[4]

As of the census[7] of 2000, there were 970 people, 354 households, and 260 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,788.1 people per square mile (693.6/km²). There were 372 housing units at an average density of 685.7 per square mile (266.0/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.42% White, 0.21% Native American, 0.82% from other races, and 1.55% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.81% of the population.

There were 354 households out of which 38.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.0% were married couples living together, 6.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.3% were non-families. 23.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.27.

In the village the population was spread out with 30.0% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 100.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.3 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $45,417, and the median income for a family was $50,417. Males had a median income of $38,125 versus $23,750 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,142. About 4.6% of families and 6.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.9% of those under age 18 and 2.8% of those age 65 or over.
