The episodes of the third season of the anime series Naruto: Shippuden are directed by Hayato Date, and produced by Studio Pierrot and TV Tokyo. They are based on Part II of the Naruto manga series by Masashi Kishimoto.[1] The third season was broadcast on TV Tokyo in Japan, between April 3, and August 14, 2008.[2] Titled in Japan Twelve Guardian Ninja (守護忍十二士 Shugonin Jūnishi),[3] it follows the group of leaf ninjas who meet a training monk Sora who is related to Asuma Sarutobi.
The season was later released on three DVDs in Japan between September 3 and November 5, 2008 by Aniplex.[4] On January 2, 2009 Viz Media and Crunchyroll began providing subtitled Naruto: Shippuden episodes.[5] The English dub began airing on Disney XD on October 28, 2009,[6] with this season airing between November 3, 2010 and March 9, 2011.[7] Viz Media also released it in two DVD boxes on January 25 and April 26, 2011.[8][9] Manga Entertainment released it in two boxes in the United Kingdom on May 16, 2011 and July 11, 2011.[10][11]
The opening theme for this season was "Blue Bird" (ブルーバード, Burūbādo) by Ikimono-gakari, and the ending themes were "Sunao na Niji" (素直な虹, "Honest Rainbow") by Surface from episode 54 to 63 and "Broken Youth" by NICO Touches the Walls from episode 64 to 71. The second feature movie, Naruto Shippuden The Movie: Bonds, which is based on the Naruto: Shippuden series, was released on August 2, 2008. The broadcast versions of episodes 70 and 71 include scenes from the movie in the opening themes, while still retaining the original music.

Kakashi leaves the hospital, and trains with Naruto and Yamato who sets up the training field with Earth and Water Style Jutsu. Naruto uses Multi Shadow Clone Jutsu that the original user learns after using the clone. They take and hold a leaf attempting to slice it in half with wind chakra as the first step of manipulation. | |||

While Naruto and clones continue training, Asuma informs him for advice that he is also a wind type. Naruto successfully slices a leaf in half. Before he, Kakashi, Sakura, Sai, Yamato and Team 10 leave the village, it is revealed that Asuma is Konohamaru's uncle. Meanwhile on a hill near a destroyed village, four cloaked enemies discuss the awakening of the Fire Country against the Leaf Village. | |||

Naruto finds one of the four protected hidden tombs and unusually fights with a training monk named Sora who uses wind chakra technique, before Sakura, Yamato, Sai and the monks arrive. Arriving at the Fire Temple, Naruto recognizes it from the nightmare. | |||

The monks converse with the team about the tombs holding the country's loyal bodyguards of the feudal lord. After seeing all monks training to spar, Naruto challenges Sora, but the monk stops the fight. At the cave, Sora practices Beast Wave Palm and tells Naruto that he will avenge his father. Asuma supervises and notices that Sora has very powerful wind chakra like Naruto. Tsunade and Yamato learn from Chiriku about Sora inadvertently being responsible for destroying the Temple of Fire. Asuma gives the black claw to Sora and learns that Sora's father Kazuma has failed to kill the Hokage. Furido tells Sora that Asuma was responsible for killing Kazuma and passing him two "king" pieces from a Shogi to Asuma. As Danzo leaves, Sora furiously throws a chakra-powered kunai through a tree and destroys the stone behind it in the training grounds. | |||

As the ANBU members capture Danzo and a rain ninja spy, Sora blames Asuma for murdering Kazuma and attacks him with his demonic arm. Naruto saves Sora from shuriken attacks of an unknown individual from the Root. Furido orders Sora to kill Asuma and Tsunade. That night after saving Tsunade, Naruto pursues Sora while a mysterious lightning storm strikes and cuts off power from the Leaf Village. | |||

The villagers confront Furido's 4-Man Team who sealed the Leaf Village behind a barrier. Asuma catches up with Sora and Naruto, and learns that the team are planning to annihilate the village with lightning powers of the stolen corpses. As Naruto fights with Fuka again, Asuma fights with Kitane, Fudo against Yamato and Furido informs Sora that he will destroy the village. | |||

Sora refuses Furido to forgive him and learns that Kazama has gathered traces of the Nine-Tails' chakra that implanted on Sora's body. Fuka fails to steal chakra from Naruto who cuts her hair and defeats her with the Rasengan. Asuma breaks free from the electric barrier and defeats Kitane. Furido removes the seal that contains Sora's power of the pseudo-Jinchuriki. | |||

Sora suffers with the powers of the pseudo-Jinchuriki, before Asuma and Naruto arrive. Asuma confronts Furido for killing Kazuma. As the others arrive, they fail to restrain Sora while he transforms into the Three-Tailed beast. | |||

Sai leaves the hospital and arrives to help Asuma defeat Kazuma, before Naruto releases the Nine Tails' chakra from Sora. The next day, Sora leaves the Leaf Village to travel the world while recovering, Asuma and Shikamaru discuss about the mysterious "king" of the village, and Hidan and Kakuzu confront Yugito Nii and Two-Tailed beast Matatabi. |
