Loewe, S.A. (Spanish: [ˈlweβe][1]) is a Spanish luxury fashion house based in Madrid and is owned by the LVMH Group. It was founded in 1846.[2] Jonathan Anderson was appointed creative director in 2013.[3]

The company deals primarily in leather products. The main item produced and sold by Loewe is bags for men and women. The company also sells other luxury fashion items such as ready-to-wear clothes, accessories, and home and lifestyle products such items include towels, journals, wallets, keyrings, and even beach paddles.

History

It was founded in 1846 in Madrid by a group of Spanish leather craftsmen, and the brand originated in 1876 when Enrique Loewe Roessberg, a German craftsman, joined the group.

King Alfonso XIII of Spain granted Enrique Loewe Hinton, a descendant of the original brand founder, the title of Supplier to the Royal Court. His wife, Queen Victoria Eugenie, frequently visited the store on Príncipe de Madrid street.

The current Queen consort of Spain, Queen Sofía, has been seen several times with Loewe handbags.

Jonathan Anderson, a 2005 College of Fashion graduate, became Loewe’s creative director in 2013. He was born in Northern Ireland in 1984.[4] Anderson’s first ready-to-wear collections for LOEWE were presented in 2014. He also deployed a new publicity campaign by Steven Meisel.[5]

The company remains based in Spain. Manufacture, particularly of leather goods, takes place in Madrid, and Loewe stores are located worldwide.

Current activities

In 2014, Anderson stated the company had plans to remodel Loewe stores using designs based on the 1960s Loewe stores, which were designed by architect Javier Carvajal.[6]

Anderson said in interviews that the Loewe Brand is bringing back styles and products from the 1950s, 60s and 70s.[7] As part of this re-branding, Loewe produced a new logo (by M/M Paris), new models of their classic Flamenco and Amazona bags, and launched new bag designs such as the Puzzle bag.[8]

LOEWE Foundation

In 1988, Enrique Loewe Lynch, great-grandchild of the firm’s creator, founded The Loewe Foundation, a private cultural foundation that supports cultural events and exhibitions.[9] The Foundation receive a Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts from the Spanish government in 2002.[10]
